Most people don't renew their wedding vows within the first year of marriage - but most people don't suffer a life-threatening medical emergency at the altar.
Malcolm Jondahl was minutes away from marrying sweetheart Tanya Davies when he collapsed at the creekside venue of their wedding in rural Northland in January.
The 35-year-old has a heart condition and became ill after emerging from a last-minute swim. The Whangarei couple quickly exchanged basic vows moments before the Northland Emergency Rescue Trust helicopter arrived to fly the newlyweds to Whangarei Hospital.
Tanya Jondahl said this week the wedding they had planned would now take place next summer. Some of their guests might not be able to afford to return for the renewal of the couple's vows, but otherwise the wedding would be similar to what they had originally planned, she said.
Her husband was dealt another health blow less than a week after the wedding when he suffered a stroke, but was well now.
