So you've got a few days of down time and you want to spruce up the property by painting the fence. Many find painting is relaxing and rewarding, while others find it a chore. So depending on, ahem, which side of the fence you're on, here are a few pointers:
Not everyone wants to paint a fence
Tom Sawyer had it sussed - he used reverse psychology to convince others to help him finish the job. Just remember, he was a fictional character. There's no need for mind games but if someone offers help, accept and make sure you have enough cold beverages.
Enjoy it while you're doing it
It's only a fence, but act like you're an artist and you will have more fun. Whistling is good for the soul. If listening to sports, it's standard practice to leave the radio ever so slightly off the station.
Preparation is key to a lasting finish
Treat areas of moss or mould with a moss and mould killer, making sure it's diluted with clean water. Leave for up to 48 hours to be sure it has worked. Sand along the grain to remove imperfections.
Use a decent brush
Cheap brushes may leave bristles in your work. An angled brush will help get to those hard to reach places, like between the slats. Sand edges of sharp timber to round them and help with paint application.
Don't dunk whole brush in the paint can
You need only cover about one-third of the brush, and remember to wipe the extra paint off on the inside lip of the can. Use a brush 10cm to 15cm wide.. With your fingers on the metal part of the brush and your thumb on the opposite side, start painting each slat of the fence with smooth, up-and-down strokes. Always coat underneath the fence as this prevents moisture getting into the timber. You should apply two coats.
Your fence, your gallery
A newly painted fence can look like a fresh canvas to your neighbourhood tagger, so think carefully before you paint that six-footer outside your door in refrigerator white. Popular colours include green, olive, rust red and other earthy tones. Ask your local paint shop about an anti-graffiti coating.
