Stray cats are quite often timid and shy, and this ginger is no different.
"It's quite stressful coming into this environment for some of them," said Nicole Rushbrook, senior feline attendant at the SPCA's Animal Village in Mangere.
The three-year-old female is quite friendly when the cage door is closed, but cowers away when it is opened.
"When she gets used to you she's very friendly," said feline attendant Liza Arnold.
"She's smoochy but it's probably best for her to be re-homed without any other cats."
She was brought in on 18 December along with a litter of six kittens.
The kittens have been adopted, but their mother is still looking for a home.
Older cats are harder to find homes for, says Auckland SPCA chief executive Bob Kerridge.
This cat has just been spayed so her stitches will need to come out on January 5.
