If you've ever visited Mexico you'll be familiar with their version of our iceblock - the paleta (pa-lee-ta). Made from frozen fresh fruit, the name comes from palo, or "stick," and they're sold from cute little carts and kiosks called paleterias.
Now, Jeremy Schmid (famous for his Little Boys sausages and wonderful Two Fifteen Bistro on Dominion Rd) and colleague Hayden Lomax have created New Zealand-style paletas, turning our local fruit into delicious hand-crafted iceblocks. With no nasty additives and all the goodness of real fruit, these are the bomb if you're looking for a refreshingly cool, healthy sweet treat. The flavours are magical - feijoa and pear, raspberry and cream, berry smoothie. Sweet as!
Available from this Sunday at the Clevedon Farmers' Market or check out facebook.com/PaletaNZ.
