We've played the Xbox and the PS2 versions of this game and — give or take a few polygons and textures — there's not a lot of difference.
If you're unfamiliar with the PC original, the gameplay focuses on Agent 47, a ruthless killer-for-hire who goes about his work with a disturbing degree of composure.
Forced out of retirement when his friend, the priest, is kidnapped, 47 needs help from his underworld contacts and must do them a few favours in return.
The gameplay hasn't changed much from the original formula with each mission containing various objectives. Rarely are they spelled out in much detail. Some will find this somewhat annoying but we enjoyed the open-ended, non-linear aspects.
There are a good variety of weapons and it's up to you to work out how to best achieve your objectives — trial and error do come into it and you'll find yourself restarting time and again if you're careless.
This is not a fast-paced action title, full of gun battles and cheap action. It's a thinking player's game, often slow and frustratingly difficult at times.
The overall style of the game is definitely a hook. The gigantic maze-like levels are overflowing with eye-catching detail, clever lighting and shadow effects.
