Herald rating: ***
Lightweight story, but Will Smith's in fine form as Alex Hitchens, New York's hottest "date doctor".
His latest assignment is to set up Albert (Kevin James), a loser accountant, with Allegra (Amber Valletta), a glamorous socialite who seems much too old for her parents to have named her after a steamy night at Cirque du Soleil.
Enter Sara (Eva Mendes), gossip columnist, who is on the duty-free scent of a story. You can join the dots to make up the rest of the plot.
DVD features are as likeable as the flick, especially the goofy Smith-James dance instruction, Dance Steps Made Easy; Love In New York, a location shooting track that's not too unlike the above-mentioned, given an added twist as passers-by try to sneak a peek at Smith. Red Carpet Race shows the superstar touring England's three largest cities for premieres within 12 hours. Costume designer Marlene Stewart opens Smith's wardrobe, there are tips for the desperate and dateless in The Dating Experts, three deleted scenes, Amerie's 1 Thing music video, but no commentaries.
