The heartwarming moment that a couple with Down syndrome got engaged, after a lifelong friendship, has melted hearts across the internet.

The happy news of Nick and Sarah's engagement was shared by the Chick-fil-A restaurant in Austin, Texas, who posted a series of photos of the couple on Facebook.

"They have known each other since they were three years old," they explained. "And tonight, he built up the courage to ask for her hand in marriage. How sweet is that."

Photos of Nick getting down on one knee to propose and the couple cuddling happily after she accepted have been liked almost 9,000 times across Facebook and Imgur.

Nick is seen dropping to one knee at the chicken restaurant and producing a ring to a delighted Sarah.

Although she's grinning from ear-to-ear she looks to be taking it all in her stride as he slips the ring on to her finger.

The happy couple then seal their union with a kiss and cuddle, before posing for more photos to commemorate the happy moment.
