By JACK LASENBY
As I tiptoed down the road past Gladys Tremble's place, her old man's dog started barking. A light came on. I jumped down in the drain beside the road and tried to crawl past, but the dogs barked louder. 'Don't move or I'll shoot!' shouted Old Man Tremble.
I slid under the fence. The barbed wire tore a hole in the seat of my school shorts. It scratched my bum so I thought I'd been shot. I cut across the paddocks and came back on to the road a couple of miles past Trembles'.
First thing in the morning, my mother would sool her bloodhounds on to my scent. I swarm several miles up the middle of the Waharoa Creek. I thought it was the sort of thing real jokers would do. Besides, I knew bloodhounds can only swim downstream.
