By JACK LASENBY
My sister sat around all day, listening - in on the party line, washing her hair, and telling on me. Nobody told her she was a disappointment. Nobody said she had to marry Gladys Tremble. If something needed doing, she'd always just painted her fingernails. She never had to do a hand's turn around the place. It wasn't fair!
Then one Christmas, Santa Claus gave me Barry Crump's book A Good Keen Man about the deer cullers. They sounded like real jokers, and I wanted to be a real joker, too. I slide my pocket-knife in the mouth of my money-box and wiggled out all the pennies and a threepence I'd found. I stuck a pair of socks and a billy into my school bag. Once it was dark, I climbed out the window and set off for the bush, red-covered Whitcombe and Tombs school atlas in one hand, school bag on my back.
