Two top hairdressers give the lowdown on this season's trends
LUCY VINCENT-MARR
Lucy Vincent-Marr and her husband run the Stephen Marr salons in Ponsonby and Newmarket.
What's happening for winter?
We've gone quite understated. On short hair, we're doing quite heavy, moddish, foppish shapes with a lot of texture, but the shape is still relatively flat. There's some subtle undercuts going on, more to support and give shape rather than to be hard-out and punky. As far as long hair goes, there's more of a bohemian feel going on with glossy, soft texture-like wave or movement in the hair. Everybody's coming in asking for a Sienna Miller look at the moment.
What's the easiest way to get Sienna hair?
To kick start, you must have really healthy hair and it's got to have a reasonable amount of interest around the front and quite shorter layers, like a long fringe. Wind the hair up into big knots. Twist and twist the hair until it twists back on itself into a little knob, pin it and sleep on it. Take it out in the morning and you get a really beautiful kick. Wait for it to drop a bit, then round-brush the front.
Hot colours for the season?
We're not seeing lots of different colours but a lot of solid colours, like gold and chocolates.
Favourite product of the moment?
Mop's C-System Shaping Serum is awesome. Most people read about hair glosses and serums and love the idea of them, put them on their hair and end up looking like a greasy hobo but this one is so light. $36.95 from selected hair salons.
RICHARD KAVANAGH
Richard Kavanagh has been hairdressing for almost 20 years but now devotes much of his time to hairdressing inventions.
What's happening for winter?
Winter's always a tricky one because it's raining a lot there's a lot of moisture in the air. So we have to have something that's a little more natural feeling. We're in the middle of this 80s anything-goes revival, which makes it really tough when we talk about trends. My favourite look is a little choppy 20s bob a la Amelie from the French movie a couple of years ago. It's a classic.
What about colour?
We tend to go a little bit darker in the winter. We're seeing cooler, flatter tones of colour, more natural, very wintry colours and not a lot of warmth.
What's your favourite product?
Redken's Satinwear Blow-dry Lotion is great. It really helps protect hair.
Favourite gadget?
The Richard Kavanagh Professional Ionic Hairdryer. It's digital. It can dry hair up to 40 per cent faster than an equivalent professional 1800-watt dryer. There's also less damage so hair has no static and is left smooth and shiny. Available from selected hair salons next month.
Best thing you can do for you hair?
Get yourself a pot of deep conditioning treatment. It's winter, so light the fire, have nice hot steaming shower or bath, shampoo your hair, put a treatment on, wrap your hair up in a hot towel and sit next to the fire for 30 minutes before you rinse it out.
