The Echo Walking Festival is a great way to discover the walks in the southern Coromandel. The programme of freedom and guided walks runs April 22 - 30, and includes beach and wetland walks, historic goldmining trails, walks through townships and in the wilderness. Examples are the Haiku Pathway through Katikati, the Katikati to Matakana Island walk and the Waiorongomai to Te Aroha walk, which takes you to the top of Mt Te Aroha.
