Delicious gift ideas for this festive season.
Edible Christmas presents are a great way to give, after all who doesn't appreciate a homemade treat that you may not have the time or know-how to make yourself? While half-eaten chutneys may clog the back shelf of the fridge for months to come, these ideas are so delicious they won't last much into the New Year.
The tamarind and lemongrass paste is not only scrumptious as a dip with vegetables but also very good served with barbecued fish and chicken.
Warmed and then spooned over sizzling cubes of tofu with spring onions and coriander is another way to enjoy this very handy little jar of exotic goodness. Put into an attractive jar then wrap, letting the lucky recipient know that once opened it will keep for two months in the fridge.
Vanilla syrup is a versatile favourite and is gorgeous with the added flavours of rosewater, cinnamon and cardamom. Poured directly over fresh fruit or over your French toast, drizzled over cakes or even splashed into your morning coffee, it is very simple to make and provides a lovely additional flavour to all it touches.
Everyone loves a truffle, especially at Christmas. Making your own is a doddle and they taste delectable. Make sure to use the best quality chocolate you can afford to ensure it melts as soon as it touches your tongue. I have topped them with beautiful pomegranate seeds but passionfruit would be equally as lovely as would some tiny silver balls or a little gold leaf. Find some festive tissue paper and a small box to pop them in and you will have a lovely present to delight someone dear.
Chef's tip
Hunt around antique and junk shops for interesting old bottles and jars, then find beautiful ribbons to adorn your gifts with. Rosewater is available from Middle Eastern food stores and many supermarkets.
