According to Mum, Uncle Quinn had come to the Wanganui River District fresh out from Ireland, talking with an accent that the blokes couldn't understand and all the girls thought "dreamy'. He'd taken out a lease on a property that had been abandoned since 1931 during the Great Depression and against all odds and expectations had turned the place into one of the most profitable little farms you could find anywhere. He soon won everybody's respect, not only as a farmer and a fencer and a horse breaker, but also as a pig hunter, deerstalker, trout fisherman and a dog trainer. He made quite a name for himself as a scrapper too, having once held a boxing title in Ireland. He married a local girl and life was good until tragedy struck ten years later when Quinn's wife and son were killed in an auto accident.
