It might not have the same cachet as the Oscars, and the organisation behind them, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, is a private club of film journalists of dubious reputation, but the Golden Globes are still the main opening act for the Academy Awards. The Globes also have more categories, covering drama, comedies and musicals as well as the best in television.
It might give an early indication of just how Peter Jackson and his final Lord of the Rings chapter may fare next month, assuming of course he gets the nomination nod from the Academy on Wednesday morning.
And only at the Golden Globes do you get Ricky Gervais of BBC comedy The Office up against Matt LeBlanc of American sitcom Friends.
The 61st annual Golden Globes are awarded this afternoon New Zealand time and are screened tonight on TV2, 8pm. Here's a reminder of who's up for an award.
