Gardening and DIY: Urban Orchard - pruning time

Now is the time to sharpen your pruners and get out on a sunny day to do some winter pruning.

All pip fruit trees can get a haircut, along with kiwifruit and grapes. Raspberries, boysenberries and loganberries require all old canes to be cut down to ground level.

Select the newest and strongest canes to bear for next season. Gooseberries and black and red currents need their old wood pruned but retain new growth as this will bear fruit next season. Spray your passion fruit and strawberry plants with a copper spray.
