Gandalf

Gandalf (Sir Ian McKellen): The wandering wizard or Istari who is Frodo's chief ally in the quest.

He leads the fellowship until he meets a Balrog in the Mines of Moria. Long allied with Elrond of Rivendell and the Dunedain, Gandalf has a special affection for the hobbits and the Shire.

He is known as Mithrandir (Grey wanderer) to the elves.

After the great battle with the Balrog of Moria, Gandalf shed his grey mantle and took up the title of Gandalf the White. His power now shines undiluted in the eyes of the pale wizard.

After their triumph at Helm's Deep, Gandalf continues to be a vital part of the war against evil and will make his way to Minas Tirith for the final battle.
