Looking at Fusion's new MS-RA200 marine stereo, one has to wonder: is the CD about to go the way of the vinyl record, the cassette tape and the dodo?
The latest addition to Fusion's True Marine range is being billed as a "super-compact" unit, mainly because of the absence of a CD player.
Whereas, until now, sound system manufacturers have focused on providing multiple CD units, Fusion has turned the game on its head and fitted none at all.
"There are no 'last-century' CDs needed with the MS-RA200," claims Fusion's Glenn Orr. "Users simply connect an iPhone, iPod, USB stick or powered hard-drive and enjoy hours of music."
These modern music systems connect to the stereo via what Fusion says is the world's first iPod/USB waterproof dock, specially designed to protect such devices from the salt-laden sea air and harsh marine environment.
Orr says the versatile unit can also use the waterproof dock to play video from an iPod or iPhone with the iPod menu, including "Fusion Alpha Search Technology" (Fast), being replicated on the stereo's display.
The unit features two separate independently controlled zones, 50 watts x 4 channels and a receiver capable of picking up AM/FM and marine VHF broadcasts. An optional remote, the MS-WR600, allows users to control the stereo without having to be by the dash.
Orr says that, despite the MS-RA200's sophisticated systems, the unit is both simple to control and extremely compact.
"With the battle for space on modern vessel dashboards becoming ever more intense, the RA-200 provides the ideal solution," he says.
"It is just 157mm wide and a staggeringly small 93mm deep."
Orr says this has been achieved by using the "absolute latest" six-layer printed circuit board topography, combined with new ultra small SMT chip componentry.
"However, while small in size, the RA-200 boasts large, easy-to-operate-at-speed, laser-etched back-lit controls, highlighting its heritage as a designed-from-the-ground-up stereo, especially for the marine environment."
The MS-RA200 will make its New Zealand debut at next month's Hutchwilco New Zealand Boat Show.
