Talk about timing. Just when the conduct of US soldiers is under more scrutiny than ever, this game is due to be released.
Full Spectrum Warrior is based on training simulations used by the US Army to prepare its soldiers for urban fighting in situations such as Iraq.
Games where US forces take on terrorists have proliferated of late. Full Spectrum Warrior takes them to a new level, as it is an almost officially licensed game. Here, though, the licensing is done by the US Army, rather than a sporting body, such as the Rugby Union or Fifa.
It is a breathtaking game that leaves you with a slight uneasiness. While Iraq isn't mentioned, Full Spectrum Warrior involves a series of missions during 24 hours in a Middle-Eastern city.
Probably much like the real thing, tasks involve rescue missions, clearing buildings and areas of militants, and getting around the war-torn city.
It's an exciting game with excellent graphics, although this means some of it will upset sensitive souls. Don't expect health packs or power-ups. This is gritty realism of the movie Black Hawk Down.
The fact that there are so many US-versus-the-bad-guys games around means Full Spectrum Warrior
isn't totally original.
You will see elements such as squad-based play reminiscent of other games, especially those with Tom Clancy's name on them. Careful planning, deploying your men carefully and giving each individual clear orders is essential.
It is played from a third-person perspective, and an almost jumpy camera view of the sort you see during street fighting on news reports make
Full Spectrum Warrior seems exciting and urgent.
