RAY
Herald rating: * * * *
Jamie Foxx stars as Ray Charles, who against all manner of adversity - growing up in an impoverished southern family, losing his sight through glaucoma and battling racism in show business - enjoyed a lifelong, highly successful musical career and smashed barriers between the traditionally separate genres of rhythm and blues, country and pop music.
Foxx nails it, portraying Charles as a charming womaniser with an irrepressible sense of mischief, who must face up to his drug addiction and lingering guilt about the death of his brother, one of his last childhood memories before he lost his eyesight.
This role, with his part in Michael Mann's Collateral the same year, was a turning point for Foxx's career. He started as a comedian on early 1990s TV show In Living Color and progressed through lightweight comedies like Booty Call, but now lands more serious dramatic roles. (2004)
