HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN
Herald rating: * * * *
The third and arguably one of the best adaptations of J.K. Rowling's sorcerer-boy novels thankfully doesn't rely on prior knowledge from the books. Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron (Y Tu Mama Tambien) handles Potter's adolescent years extremely well as the young wizards head for their third term at Hogwarts. With the help of his pals and Professor Lupin (David Thewlis), Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) deals with an escapee from Azkaban prison (Gary Oldman) who may have been involved in the murder of Harry's parents. HOTEL RWANDA
Herald rating: * * * *
Don Cheadle stars in the true story of a Rwandan hotel manager who managed to hide 1200 people in a tourist hotel while genocide was taking place. In 1994, one million Tutsi were massacred by the rival Hutu tribe while the rest of the world ignored their peril. The hotel, part of an international chain with its corporate office in Brussels, provides the perfect setting to illustrate the reluctance of the international community to get involved. (2004)
