ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13
Herald rating: * * * *
A gripping remake of the 1976 John Carpenter film, which was a cross between Rio Bravo and Night of the Living Dead.
Precinct 13 is a police station scheduled for closure, where Sergeant Jake Roenick (Ethan Hawke) ends up after a drug bust goes wrong and his team is killed.
On New Year's Eve a busload of prisoners, including a junkie, a con-man and a cop killer, are jailed at the precinct overnight because of a blizzard.
Soon after, masked men show up in black SUVs, surround the building, and demand the release of one of the prisoners. Outnumbered and outgunned, Roenick enlists the help of the prisoners.
It's not hard to pick holes in the plot, but the action is relentless. The strong supporting cast includes Laurence Fishburne as mobster Marion Bishop, John Leguizamo (ER) and Drea De Matteo (The Sopranos). (2005)
