KEY POINTS:
Like most French women, Soukeyna Dombrowsky has an appreciation for simple yet indulgent pleasures in life: a fragrance, good food, well-crafted clothes and accessories. The 36-year-old moved to Auckland 13 years ago from Aix-en-Provence in the South of France and now calls Titirangi home.
Dombrowsky, who is studying languages at Auckland University of Technology, describes her style as unique. "It's comfortable and relaxed, inspired by French flair." She's also a fan of bright colour. "Too much black around is depressing. Black boots, black coats, it's so boring and there is so much of it that it's not even classy anymore." She reveals that French women's elegance and casual style is all in the attitude. "The secret to French chic is to be confident in what you are wearing and along will come the charm."
Who are your favourite designers?
No favourites, I always find something I like and don't like in any collection. As long as it comes with a life warranty, I am happy! One thing I can't stand is a garment I really enjoy wearing that dies on me. I have always had a slight weakness, though, for French designer Jean Paul Gaultier, for his use of interesting textiles and originality.
What's your biggest indulgence/guilty pleasure?
Ooh la la! Let's see ... in life, wines, exquisite desserts and my man! In fashion, indulging myself in purchasing items with big price tags such as the numerous accessories I can't go without.
Your favourite accessory?
Colourful foulards and scarves that complement an outfit and jewellery that makes a statement. I like little touches that make a big difference.
What's the one thing everyone should have in their wardrobe?
Underwear you feel feminine in, as it will show in your posture and attitude whatever you are wearing on top!
What is your beauty regime?
Stay active and be out in the fresh air as much as possible. Enjoying simple recipes made of seasonal, cheap products. If it's too expensive I personally expect too much from it and often find myself disappointed, whereas with a bargain you can challenge yourself and always feel happy with the result! To me the best-tasting food is the simplest.
Your best beauty tip?
Sleep, sleep, sleep! But never go to bed without having had a laugh and if you can get a cuddle, that's even better.
What can't you live without?
Love in general. And my favourite shoes. A good pair of shoes can make any outfit work for me.
Your fashion obsession?
Perfume will complete any look. As far as I am concerned, one can be dressed to their best but if they stink they will suddenly look terrible. It is so important, definitely part of an outfit for me. People too often forget about that aspect of one's appearance.
The best-dressed French woman is ... ?
The one who is the happiest and takes pride in her appearance. It's more of an attitude really, one can be very well dressed but the best-dressed is the one who knows how to carry herself gracefully inside and out. The French first lady, Carla Bruni, seems to embody that statement for me. But real style, which is timeless, is such a personal matter.
The rule you always dress by?
Comfort and harmony. Never ever wear something you don't feel comfortable in even if it is in fashion. Everyone has their own style, find yours and stick with it.
What do you wear to work?
Well, I am studying at the moment. But it depends on my mood, the weather and what I want to achieve. As long as I stay elegant and feminine, I am happy. I like to wear colours in New Zealand winters.
Best sartorial advice you ever had?
To keep clear from ridicule, always dress appropriate to your age.
Most cherished item?
My perfume that makes me feel special whatever I am wearing.
Most stylish city and why?
My home town Aix-en-Provence is stylish by nature. Anyone who has been there will understand and anyone who has not been there must go!
What are you never caught wearing?
Well no one is perfect, so there are no "no-no's" for me, nothing is forbidden. You can mix and match as long as you have your own sense of style and if you get "caught" accept that there might be bad days. Every French woman has one, believe me!
Most underrated fashion item?
Your hairstyle.
What's the secret to chic French style?
French style comes in all shapes, sizes and colours. Elegance matches any type of figure. I believe fashion does not necessarily come down to what you wear, but how you are wearing it.
