1. Three in one

ITU World Triathlon Series is back in our city, with the world's best athletes vying for supremacy in the Elite Women's and Men's races. But the Barfoot & Thompson event also features a range of open participation races, from hard core to "have a go". Winners of the national champs can qualify for the age group world champs in Chicago, but weekend warriors can also get in some fast sprints in the centre of the city, or you can combine skills in a team for the corporate teams sprint tri. Youngsters as young as 5 can join the adults in the 5km fun run, with spot prizes and the chance to run through the blue carpet of the Elite finish chute.

2. Crank it up

Crankworx, the world's largest mountain biking festival hits Rotorua from Wednesday. As well as Australasia's whip-off champs, there's the Rotorua pump track challenge, dual speed and style, downhill and enduro events, as well as the Crankworx Triple Crown of Slopestyle.

For the timid - and the watchers - there's a Bikes and Beats Music Festival with top local artists and Kidsworx for the small sorts. They can join the pump track skills sessions, a mini-hipster downhill race at the Skyline trail (online registration required for both), join a tiki tour scavenger hunt and ride the tamariki trail. There's pimp my bike (loads of bike bling), hang out under the redwoods to meet the legends of Crankworx, and more.

3. Twice as good

The Partners Life Dual runs on one of the best landscapes in town - the islands of Motutapu and Rangitoto. There's a trail run and walk, off-road triathlon - swimming in Home Bay - and mountain biking (the only time bikes are allowed on the island).

There are still places in the family events, the 10km and 6 km run/walks (starting 10.30am and 11.30am, with ferries departing Auckland 9am and 10am respectively). Online registrations have closed, but you can still do late registrations on raceday.

4. O is for Awesome

Once again Jimi Hunt, founder of the mental health charity Live More Awesome, has created the world's biggest waterslide in a farm out west: 600m long, completely inflatable with two 100m slip 'n' slides as well, bigger and better than 2012's original.

There's food, music and great wellbeing spots for meditation, yoga, counselling, exercise and nutrition classes, all free.

Entry is through fundraising - the top 500 fundraisers get to go.
