Travel down the stairs into this cosy cave, where you can sit at the bar and choose from an extensive selection of yakitori and kushiage. There's also great Japanese beer and chilled sake.
2. Verona Cafe KRd, Auckland CBD. Ph 307 0508. Open 10am til late.
A true K Rd icon, Verona Cafe is stylish, unpretentious and laid back, with an extensive drinks menu and cabinet food for peckish pre-gamers.
3. El Camino Mexican Bar & Cafe 480 New North Rd, Kingsland. Ph 815 1025. Open 12noon til late.
A lovely little restaurant with the food, atmosphere and service to match. If you want quality Mexican food - not the overpriced CBD version - then this is the place.
4. Papa's Pizza 61 Sandringham Rd, Kingsland. Ph 849 4501. Open 4pm til late.
This little place has a real cult following, thanks to its pizzas and pastas. Open late during the RWC, but make sure to book as it's a popular place.
5. Malt Restaurant & Bar 442 Richmond Rd, Grey Lynn. Ph 360 9537. Open 10am til late.
A true favourite with central Auckland locals, Malt's a reliable pick for good, filling food and a convivial spot in which to enjoy a wine or beer. It also has comfortable leather banquette seating. 2
