Five of the best: Spots for a picnic

It's starting to feel like the tail-end of a brilliant Kiwi summer. The sun is rising a little later and there's a bite in the air once the sun sets. So, before daylight savings ends and we head into total hibernation for winter, make the most of the chance to embrace outdoor eating. Pack up a picnic for lunch or dinner and head to one of our top five spots. We bet it will prolong your happy holiday vibes.

1: Cox's Bay Reserve

Overlooking the water at Cox's Bay, this park between Herne Bay and Westmere has lots of sun-drenched grass to lay a blanket on. There are cricket nets if you're feeling World Cup-inspired and a cool walking track through the scrub. Bring your picnic and consider some sports gear - it's a popular spot for a game of touch or Frisbee.

2: Coyle Park

Perched at the end of Point Chevalier, Coyle Park ticks all the picnic boxes. Tall trees block the sea breeze and offer shade for those keen to keep out of the sun. There are also pohutukawa-fringed spots near the water, some set up with free facilities so you can take a dip then come back and cook yourself a snag on the barbie. We have spent full
days with this happy summer cycle on repeat.

3: The Domain

Right in the heart of the city, the Domain is the city's oldest park. The massive natural amphitheatre sits around the cone of an extinct volcano. After a wander around the formal gardens, bronze sculptures and reflective pool, find a spot under the century-old trees closer to the centre of the 75ha space. Feed your crusts to the ducks floating around the natural springs or there's often sport being played for you to check out.

4: Mission Bay

What's a picnic list without a mention of fish'n'chips on the beach? Pick up seafood from any number of shops along Tamaki Drive and take the wrapped goodies seaside. Families can find a spot by the fountain with plenty of room to run around, or, if you can handle
a bit of sand in your snacks, get closer to the water with a possie on the sand. A hot tip: this is a killer date.

5: North Head Historic Reserve

Take in the expansive views of the Hauraki Gulf from a picnic spot at North Head. This is particularly perfect if you're hosting out-of-towners - take a ferry to Devonport and walk to what is considered one of New Zealand's most significant defence sites. In between eating your packed sandwiches, discover World War II relics and wander around tunnels deep inside the volcanic cone. Keep in mind that vehicle gates are open 6am-6pm.
