It’s not a holiday we celebrate in New Zealand, but 4th of July is big in the US and a good excuse to get stuck in to some American-inspired eats. Herewith our five favourite haunts around Auckland with a star spangled banner vibe.
Better Burger
31 Galway St, Britomart
We're spoilt for burger choices in Auckland, but we went with Better Burger. There are only four options (get the cheeseburger) and you can turn it into a combo with hand-cut fries and a strawberry shake ($13.50). It's simple, tasty and fast but still boasts the best local ingredients sandwiched between beautiful Loaf Bakery buns.
Head to this Ponsonby haunt after the sun has gone down - it's open till 2am Thursday to Sunday. Nestle into a retro booth, or sit at the bar and watch the kitchen send out classic diner fare with a twist from head chef Tom Clouston. Mains are varied and affordable. Try the sides - crispy fried Kirby pickles ($10), spuds with La Chinata paprika and Russian mayo ($8).
Fed Deli
86 Federal St, Auckland
We're so glad to see The Fed back in business after a nasty fire. This quirky diner is Al Brown and Kyle Street's take on an old-school NYC delicatessen. The menu is mouth-watering. Some highlights: the tasty matzo ball soup with shredded chicken and bagel dumplings ($17); and a large sample ($12) of Montreal poutine, smothered in cheese and gravy.
Imperial Hotdogs
7 Fort Lane, Auckland
A hot dog has to get a mention. We dig the set-up on Imperial Lane, with its "haute dogs". This delightful cart is only open on Friday and Saturday nights. The sausages are made from organic meat and the buns are Vienna dough. Try the classic Manhattan with American yellow mustard, the spicy Moroccan, or the Banh Mi-style chicken sausage with chilli and lime.
This popular Southern-style eatery by Wynyard Quarter specialises in soul food. Most dishes are made to share - we like the fish ceviche ($18), guajillo braised pork belly with salsa verde, habanero and corn cream and lime ($26) and you can't go past the fried jerk chicken with chipotle lime mayo ($16.5). There are $7.50 tacos, good wines on tap and affordable beer.
