You might have to avoid those pesky politicians all grabbing their photo opportunity, but tomorrow's party is all about celebrating our diversity. Not just for the big boys and girls, there's kids' stuff too - at the playground end of Coyle Park.
Tomorrow, noon to 7pm. Coyle Park, Pt Chevalier. Free.
3. Mud run
If you don't have as much style - or makeup - as Big Gay Out, keep heading west to the Te Atatu peninsula for the Great Mud Run. This kindy fundraiser is filthy and fun (they'll be the only folks praying for rain this weekend) with an old-fashioned sausage sizzle, watermelon and cupcakes for afterwards. Entry by koha and they'll hose you down for no cost afterwards.
Tomorrow, from 9am. Chapman Reserve, Te Atatu. On Facebook.
4. Auckland beach football
If it's too cold to swim, head to Mission Bay for this fun footy tournament. There's a social grade as well as a more competitive one, so if you don't have a team, you can sign up as an individual too. Five players per side.
Today, 9am-5pm. Mission Bay Beach, Tamaki Drive. Free.
5. Kawhia Kai
A favourite small food festival is on today in the laid-back seaside town of Kawhia. They're promising whitebait, scallops and some Maori fermented corn delicacy we're still making up our minds about. If you're in a road trip frame of mind, head southwest, for what Lonely Planet calls one of the top 10 indigenous events for tourists to New Zealand.
Today from 9am, Omiti Park Reserve, Kawhia foreshore.
