Dogs need exercise, and so do humans - so it only makes sense to combine the two. But if jogging with the dog isn't your thing, don't worry. There are plenty of other ways to involve your pooch in your exercise routine.
Hop in the water
In the warmer months, there's no reason why your dog can't join the watersports action. Ever wanted to try stand-up paddleboarding? How about kayaking? Both these activities can be dog-friendly - just make sure you give it a test run in shallow water on a calm day first. Oh, and don't forget the doggie life-jacket. Remember to check if you're in a dog-friendly area before bringing your dog along for the fun.
Get on wheels
If running isn't your thing, why not get on wheels? And no, that doesn't just mean cycling. Why not help to foster the Great Rollerblading Comeback of 2017 or channel your youth and hop on a skateboard? Getting on wheels can be a great, fun and easy way to exercise and it's easy to bring your dog along for the ride.
Dog-friendly gyms
Did you know that some gyms in New Zealand are dog-friendly? Priority Fitness in Northcote, Auckland holds special classes to get you motivated to train with your best doggie pal. Dogs are kept on their leash when working with weights, then set free for the running component. Everyone needs a gym buddy - why can't it be your dog?
Pooch Racing
Forget greyhound racing - it's all about family-friendly competition on the race track. Pooch Racing in Cambridge is all about fun, with everyday pets competing in a 100m sprint in the name of raising funds for Assistance Dogs New Zealand. There are also owner vs. dog look-alike competitions, plus a talent quest. Head to poochracing.co.nz for all the details.
