"I don't want to stop you from taking part in the soccer finals, Ryan," Mrs Winters continued, "but our agreement was that you would be playing only if you put in some hard work on your maths homework. I'll give you one more chance - an assignment to be done tonight. If you complete it, you can play in the finals.
"Thank goodness for that! The big soccer final was this Friday - the Blue team versus the Red team. Ryan had been looking forward to it - and practising for it - all week.
"Thanks, Mrs Winters," he said, a little more cheerfully. "What's the assignment?"
The teacher thought for a minute. And then she smiled - that bright, challenging smile she used when she had an idea that really pleased her.
