Scrap Wall loves beautiful, simple things, an aesthetic that he has translated into a new boutique on Auckland's K Rd. Called One, the store sells art, objects and fashion, all carefully curated by Wall, who honed his skills while working at high-end boutiques Wunderkammer and The Corner Shop in Sydney, as well as creating prints for Australian designer Friedrich Gray last year.
The store, at 504 K Rd, will feature a selection of high-end designer men's vintage, alongside Wall's own designs - simple monochrome garments like 100 per cent cotton boxer shorts, cufflinks made in collaboration with jeweller Lisa Hoskin, a merino singlet with black silk trim, black cotton tees and "the perfect white shirt, also available in black".
10 FAVOURITE THINGS
1 White cotton
I love wearing white cotton. Beautiful white cotton boxer shorts, and a simple white shirt are the essential staples ... feels just right, and suits the, well, black everything else. Or vice versa. So black and white then.
2 Red
If there is injection of colour - like a true propaganda artist should, I love red. My favourite shoes ever are red. "Yours", designed locally, are an interesting tone; sitting on a red inverted cube in the shop of black and white, the red screams out. On my feet, they get more than a few comments.
3 Porcelain anvil
I love absurd contradictions between material forms and function, the perfect example being this porcelain anvil. Made by Tim Chapman and Greg Dyer, these amazing delicate pieces are the perfect symbol to me of modern masculinity. Chapman and Dyer also make amazing jewellery with similarly bizarre results. 4Luke Jacomb glass work
7 Luke Jacomb glass work
I think my favourite thing right now would have to be the glass work of Luke Jacomb, in particular, the set of 15 hand-blown goblets, made of black glass, sitting on the highest shelf in my new shop - so you have to look up at them, and it could seem they are almost out of reach. They are absolutely beautiful, each individually crafted, all extremely intricate. Together - seriously amazing.
5 Wunderkammer
I worked with my great friends Mark, Zora, and Paul at the boutique Wunderkammer before stepping out in my own direction. I have admired the aspirational pieces and always enjoyed the madness and character of the place.
6 Antipodes
With dinner - and for me personally, all of the time - sparkling mineral water. I drink litres of it daily, and the best in the world has to be Antipodes. The bottle is so simple, and the water just tastes perfect. Not too bubbly, not too chalky, not too anything. Perfect.
7 Independent publishing
I really admire independent publishing and creative ventures. My friend Jeff has a small company he calls the Spring Press, making records and beautiful books, some of which are available in my store, but a huge array of interesting art related publications are available just down the road in the wonderful S/F. Split/fountain is a project space, publishing venture and bookshop founded by Narrow Gauge and Michael Lett. I recognise how much work goes into getting anything published, whether it be a book, a magazine or making a record. I know of so many friends working so hard in the "creative sector", and it is so great to see so much of it actually happening. Support the independents!
8 Coco's Cantina
A little further down the strip from the store is the best food in town, Coco's Cantina. Owners Renee and Demaris are the coolest girls, in fact the whole team there are so dope, and the food is seriously amazing. The veal is sensational, although I envied the hapuka my girl had too ... it's all so good.
9 Bicycles
I love riding a bicycle - and just having them. I have peculiar tastes - and have built a couple of really interesting BMX-type things with a lot of help from Tim at T.Whites Bikes on Symonds St. Right now he is re-assembling a BMX I have just had re-painted gloss black all over, with slick tyres and a coaster brake, so there are no details on it at all - no cables, no triggers, nothing, just black. The other one is a lot more work - strange pieces from many eras combined with hundreds of chrome spokes, and strange angles and ... yeah, Tim can sort it.
10 Starkwhite Gallery
In particular, the work of Gavin Hipkins. There is a piece, titled New Age (Falls), that I'd really love to own one day, but almost all the work there is pretty exciting. The space itself is amazing and, as the name would suggest, stark white.
