Tiny Space is the newest addition to the K Road precinct, a sweet boutique selling a carefully edited and hand-picked selection of vintage and handmade pieces alongside other design items. The store, which isn't actually that tiny, is owned by Cara Cheung and her partner Wymen and sells clothes, homeware and art.
Cheung's passions are diverse, from vintage and secondhand to graphic design and music. She studied music in Dunedin and has also worked as a graphic designer for a year or so, selling pieces on craft website Etsy and now through her own store. Look for the window display of old vinyl records on Cross St and you'll know you've found the right space.
10 favourite things
Marama Hall
This is the main classical music performance venue for the music department at the University of Otago. I spent four years of my university life there and I had so many unforgettable memories and a lot of fun. If you are down in Dunedin and have a love for classical music, you should check out their weekly Wednesday lunchtime concerts at 1pm.
Music tattoo
This was my first tattoo designed by myself and represents my love for music. If you look closely, you can actually spell out the word music. I had it done in my second year of my university life and still love it more day by day.
My anything jar
I love op-shopping and this is one of the great finds: my anything jar. I just love it, simple yet functional.
The Steinway and Sons piano lock key
This is the key to the lovely Steinway grand piano in Marama Hall. I had it in my pocket while I had my last performance - I honestly had no intention of taking the key home when I left student life in Dunedin! Now and then I wear it as a pendant on a gold chain; it certainly brings back many pleasant memories.
Vintage bag
This was given to me by my mum a few years ago. It is leather, and works with anything, from a casual outfit like jeans and white tee, to a classy business suit look.
Handmade items
I love knowing that I'm supporting someone else's passion when I purchase an item that is handmade. It certainly holds that positive energy and there is love, care and thought behind the handmade item. It is a loving act.
Craft Inc: Turn your creative hobby into a business by Meg Mateo Ilasco
Since I was young I have been into cross stitch, sewing, anything that is creative, and I wished that I could make a living by doing so. This book gets you thinking about taking your hobby to the next level and is an amazing tool. Lots of practical tips and interesting interviews on various designers and craft retailers. I found Craft Inc. to be the most perfect business guide for anyone who is interested in starting a creative business or even just exploring the idea of having a creative hobby.
Beatles No 1 CD
I have been brought up and exposed to a variety of music since I was a little girl; it certainly nurtured my interest in music. My parents played a lot of music, whether it be English, Cantonese, jazz or classical. The Beatles are one of my favourites; I never get bored of listening to this CD. It features every track by the band that reached No 1 in the UK and US singles charts.
Dr. Marten shoe
These are my high school brown leather buckle Dr. Marten shoes, with scruffs and scratches here and there. I have already worn my DM shoes for almost 13 years now and still love them.
Black faceted ring
I totally fell in love with this ring when I saw it. I love how it is shaped in unusual facets. The ring is handmade by Jen from the US. I stocked this recently and they are in store now.
