CAPES
A little bit more interesting than a coat, capes and cape detailing were popular, from Juliette Hogan's pretty pastel numbers to Cybele's dramatic flowing black cape.

FUR
Perhaps it was a subtle designer protest against the inclusion of animal-loving Pamela on the ANZFW schedule, but fur - both real and faux - appeared often on the runway this year. Jackets, chubbies, muffs, stoles, bodysuits and possum fur and pearl throws, which led one fashion editor to ask, "why are models carrying pieces of dead animal down the runway?"

SHOULDERS
We can thank Balmain and the death of Michael Jackson for the huge number of bold 80s shoulder references that appeared on the runway at ANZFW - everywhere from Trelise Cooper to Stolen Girlfriends Club to Sera Lilly to Stitch Ministry.

CHUNKY KNITS
Need proof that it was winter collections on display? Look no further than the plethora of knitwear. But no fine delicate knits please, next winter designers are all about chunky, bold or loose weave knitwear that stands out.

GOWNS
Maxi-length hemlines continue to be a favourite, but this time around it's less about flowing bohemian style dresses and more about bold, glamorous gowns. We lost count of how many designers sent a show-stopping black gown down the runway as their closing outfit - and the Diet Coke Little Black Dress show was full of them.

VELVET
The luxe, sumptuous and traditionally old-fashioned fabric made an appearance throughout several collections, from Sera Lilly's glamorous red velvet dresses to Salasai's crushed velvet to Twenty-seven Names' standout crane-printed pieces.

CROPPED PANTS
Pants that end just above the ankle appeared in almost every collection last week, whether they were cropped or rolled.

BUTTONED UP
Buttoned up shirting was popular, whether it was worn by itself or layered under pieces as seen at Twenty-seven Names and Kate Sylvester.
