KEY POINTS:
As you might expect, starting her own fashion business has had a significant impact on Sarah Riley's wardrobe - even though she's not making clothes. The former art student is now making footwear under her own name. She started off designing a couple of pairs of shoes for labels like Pearl and Trelise Cooper and these were so well-received she went into business for herself.
"I wanted to put my design and art skills into something more commercial, and as I'm a girl who loves shoes, this seemed like a good idea," Riley explains.
One of the first results of her foray into fashion was a rapid de-cluttering of this self-confessed shocking shopper's shoe collection. "Although I did keep a few old favourites I just can't part with," Riley confesses. "Mainly because of the memories. Like those shoes with clear perspex heels. They look a bit like drag queen shoes - I couldn't begin to tell you what I got up to in those!"
The other outcome of Riley's new business has seen her develop a new appreciation for local fashion. "I am conscious of supporting other New Zealand designers. I think that's really important because I now know how hard it can be. New Zealand's quite a small place and it's just nice if you can buy locally designed clothing or accessories."
Who are your favourite designers?
Internationally, Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta and John Galliano. And locally I just admire all of them and the uniqueness they bring to their own collections.
What was the last item of clothing you bought?
A short cropped Zambesi jacket from [second-hand store] Double Exposure.
What's your biggest indulgence?
Shopping, followed closely by chocolate, a foot massage and sleep.
Who or what inspires you?
People who are successful and stay genuine. Acts of kindness, love and friends.
Your favourite accessory?
Shoes. If you're having a bad clothes day, then you can throw on a fabulous pair of heels and feel like a million dollars.
Who does the best shoes?
Myself! Along with John Galliano and Alexander McQueen. Shoes should be thought of as artworks, as pedestals for the wearer, and they should be designed with this in mind.
What do you really want this season?
Flowers for my backyard and an endless supply of strawberries.
Your favourite shop?
On Pedder in Hong Kong. A luxury accessories store that even has a doorperson.
Your best beauty tip?
At least 30+ sunblock, rain, hail or shine, every day of the year.
What can't you live without?
Animals, hugs, shoes and shopping.
Is there anything you'd never wear?
High-waisted, fitted pants.
What won't you be wearing this season?
Crocs.
Is there anything you think the fashion police should ban?
Wearing Crocs anywhere other than the beach or garden.
Dress to impress whom?
Yourself. If you like how you look then you will exude confidence and be able to carry off whatever you wear.
Most stylish city?
I love Rome. Men dress extremely well and so many of them look like they have stepped out of a Calvin Klein ad.
