Kate Murphy knows hair, and she also knows that big hair is good hair - her best tip. The hair stylist was recently appointed one of Sebastian's International Creative Ambassadors, and is now also director of Stephen Marr's Takapuna salon.
Murphy has more than eight years' hair styling experience, and has collaborated with many local fashion labels including favourites Cybele and Miss Crabb. Both labels reflect her distinct style, which she describes as laid-back minimalism.
"I usually wear a pretty frock, in a cotton or silk, accompanied by plain Keds - since I rush about on my feet all day at Stephen Marr, I tend to avoid heels. And, of course, I always have mussed-up hair."
What was the last item of clothing you bought?
A Miss Crabb Flower Rise dress, debuted at Laneway Festival.
How would your best friend describe your style?
"One piece of amazingness", which I guess means that I always try to wear one great piece and keep everything else uncluttered and simple.
Who is your ultimate fashion plate?
Kate McGaw, who designs Penny Sage for Miss Crabb. She made the beautiful off the shoulder number I'm wearing in the photo. Thank you Kate.
Who is your ultimate hair icon?
Zooey Deschanel and Charlotte Gainsbourgh. It seems that I like sixties-inspired brunettes...
What do you really want to buy right now?
A cocker spaniel.
Best sartorial advice you've ever had?
If you're not feeling comfortable in it, don't wear it. Invaluable advice if you're on your feet all day.
Who or what inspires you in terms of your work?
Friends, film, travel, music.
What do you wear to work?
A frock, leggings and sandshoes - always worn with the hope I won't splash any hair dye on them.
The one rule you always dress by?
Dress to impress yourself and no one else.
Who are your favourite designers?
Penny Sage at Miss Crabb. I love how all the pieces fit anyone and are timeless.
Cybele too - so feminine and unique. Given I like to wear one beautiful dress a lot of the time, Cybele is just perfect.
Your personal style quirk?
A cheeky grin.
Favourite fashion-y movie, or fashion moment in film?
I love the looks in The Breakfast Club and Desperately Seeking Susan.
How long does it take you to get ready in the morning?
10 minutes - really. No fluffing about.
Describe the best outfit you've ever worn.
An 80s sweetheart dress courtesy of MAW, paired with crisp white sandshoes courtesy of K-Mart.
What's in your handbag?
Wallet, gummy bears, cigarettes, first aid kit, lip gloss, sunglasses.
Your favourite shop?
I spend a lot of time at Miss Crabb. I also love The Department Store - the best one-stop shop for everything you need and since I started working there I've found I need rather a lot.
Favourite style decade?
The 1950s and 1970s.
