Annabel Fay has a gorgeous voice and a hot wardrobe.
Celine, Tom Ford, Rick Owens and Giuseppe Zanotti... singer Annabel Fay knows fashion. Fay released her new album Show Me the Right Way on Monday, showing off her fashion nous on the cover in a dress by Australian designer Therese Rawsthorne and jewellery from Tiffany's and local jewellery label Meadowlark. But when she's performing on stage, it's more about the venue than designer style - "I kind of change what I am wearing according to the venue I am in. If it's a casual gig I won't wear heels but most of the time I'm in jeans and a fabulous jacket." Fay talks us through her wardrobe and unique, classic style.
Who are your favourite designers?
My favourites would have to be Philip Lim, Alexander Wang, Rick Owens and Sass & Bide - mainly because of the simplicity and timelessness of a lot of their clothing but also because they cut really well for my body type.
Who does the best shoes?
Giuseppe Zanotti. His ranges are so diverse and he doesn't stick to a certain signature look which I find can be a bit annoying with high-end shoe brands.
Your favourite shop?
Adorno in Ponsonby, because they stock all my favourite labels and carry a lot of international designers that nowhere else does.
What's your fragrance?
The only fragrance I wear is Tom Ford's Black Orchid. Sex in a bottle.
Your best beauty tip or beauty essential?
Clean your skin. Since I was very young I have always taken really good care of my skin, and only wear makeup when I have to.
Your ultimate fashion plate?
I don't really have a style icon, I have always followed what I love, but I do think the likes of Sienna Miller, Rachel Zoe and Sarah Jessica Parker always look fabulous.
Do you have any style rules?
Never wear neon, visible panty lines, animal print or kitten heels.
Your favourite stylish place?
My favourite bar at the moment has to be Gypsy Tearoom in Grey Lynn. It's the one place in Auckland that you can go for a quiet drink at and not see 10 people you know.
What is your handbag - and what's in it?
My handbag is by Celine. In it I have my makeup, wallet, diary, headphones, paw paw ointment, a nail file, five pens and throat lozenges.
Describe the best outfit you've ever worn
I wore my favourite outfit was on my 22nd birthday in New York. I had on a Robert Rodriquez black and silver studded jumpsuit with bright red Louboutin heels and of course crimson lips.
How would you describe your style?
I think it's very classic. Not a lot of bright colours, a lot of structured jackets and dresses and always fabulous shoes. I think I have quite a masculine style of dressing but with a very feminine air.
Currently on repeat on your iPod?
Adele's Rolling in the Deep (Jaime XX remix).
How would your best friend describe your style?
I just called her and she said, "Classic with a rock twist, definitely not girly". Haha.
What is your favourite city for shopping and style?
New York, especially Soho. It's fantastic because you have all the couture designers but you also have really one-off stores just next door. If I had to shop at one store for the rest of my life it would be Intermix on Prince St: perfection.
Your most cherished fashion item?
It would have to be my Dolce & Gabbana leather bomber jacket. I tried it on in David Jones and decided not to buy it because summer was coming, but when I went back a few months later it was still there - it was an extra bonus that it was on sale then, too.
Best sartorial advice you have ever had?
For a woman to be sexy, she doesn't have to show a lot of skin.
