Comfort's king in this season’s key ankle boot styles.
Winter boots are a seasonal must-have, and while knee-high options continue to provide plenty of inspiration, it's ankle boots that are taking centre stage this year.
As the debate continues about whether designers are creating anything "new" these days in a season that's seeing more 60s and 70s references than ever before, there's no denying the enduring influence these eras provide, with several of this season's looks featuring updated takes on classic mod, western and chelsea boot styles.
Fashion houses with a strong link to those eras are also seeing a return to their design DNA, from the folksy western-style ankle boots at Chloe to the rock 'n' roll winklepicker-style boots at Saint Laurent. The latter is also seeing a resurgence in popularity of a low-profile suede boot, the kind that Yves Saint Laurent muse Betty Catroux would have worn with a safari suit and characteristically laissez-faire hair back in the day. Similar suede boots are available close to home, such as the Stuart Weitzman "Modesto" boot from Runway available in faithful black and a burgundy (#7) or the classic "Alaska" chelsea boot from Mi Piaci (#2).
The chelsea boot revival provides plenty of opportunity to play with cropped tailored pants or fitted jeans. Try the "Jerry" boot by Beau Coops, available in this stunning colour combination of navy and gold gusset (#3) or a brown and metallic bronze gusset that's sure to add some high-octane glamour to an otherwise casual look.
