The "fairytale-inspired" hoodie created by Khrishae Teriaki.
Rookie will mix it with the luminaries at NZ Fashion Week.
Student designer Khrishae Teriaki says she was always "a bit tomboyish".
She has made countless hoodies, including one for her partner with a white leather hood and sleeves.
But it is her "fairytale-inspired" hoodie made from Indian saris that will start her fashion career.
The 30-year-old NZ Fashion Tech diploma student won a challenge which asked students to design garments representing the latest paint colours from Resene, using hand-woven silk made on ancient looms by locals in the village of Dhoddampalayam in south India.
Her blue garment, named New Life Resolution, will feature with nine of her peers' outfits in four shows starting on Wednesday at New Zealand Fashion Week, before the Resene Designer Selection Show at Auckland's Viaduct Events Centre.
Fashion luminaries have descended on Auckland for Fashion Week, which begins today.
The likes of Kate Sylvester, who will be launching her 2016 autumn/winter collection, NOM*D, Andrea Moore, and Tanya Carlson, are just a few of the designers to feature.
The show begins with an opening ceremony tonight before the first of the designers - including Hailwood, Liz Mitchel and twenty-seven names - start hitting the runway at noon tomorrow.
Ms Teriaki, who lives in Mangere, was inspired by the Little Red Riding Hood character on the TV show Once Upon a Time for her outfit.
"I wanted it to be edgy but at the same time bold and beautiful," she said. "I wanted the wearer to feel unrestricted and be able to move freely. For me, freedom of movement is important in good fashion design."
Speaking about her childhood, she said: "I would wear jeans and turtlenecks. Mum would lay out my clothes ready for school in the mornings and I didn't like them so I would change them to something more casual."
Ms Teriaki will sit among fashion big-wigs at this week's event.
Her prize is a trip for two to attend next year's iD Dunedin Fashion event.
Val Marshall-Smith, director of NZ Fashion Tech and one of the judges, said of Ms Teriaki's creation: "It's a look I can see any of the world's leading young fashion influencers wanting to wear to a glamour event.
"It carries bold colour well, it responds well to the brief and it makes skilful use of the five metres of fabric Khrishae had to work with. To make both a coat and a dress from her sari was exceptional."
