KEY POINTS:
Mineral makeup was long consigned to the "too hard basket" due to the perception you needed a PhD to apply the powder without ending up with a "just dipped in pancake batter" look.
Then synthetic ingredients, which make up the bulk of conventional cosmetics, developed a nasty rap. Research increasingly showed preservatives like parabens, petroleum-derived substances such as mineral oil, foam-building chemicals like sodium lauryl sulfate, chemical dyes and perfumes were just not skin-friendly. They dried, caused allergic reactions and sun sensitivity.
Even more frightening was the revelation these toxic substances could potentially cause headaches, dizziness and nausea. Cancer was even mentioned.
And so we began to view mineral makeup - and its long-lasting natural look, without chemicals - in a much kinder light.
Today, minerals are all the rage, widely used in foundations, eye shadows and lipsticks.
Basically, the minerals are plucked from the ground and micronised (reduced to tiny particles) to produce a silk-like, water-resistant powder. Pigments in the powder, like zinc oxide, titanium oxide and boron nitride have the ability to scatter light - giving the illusion of perfect skin.
And the added bonus? The titanium oxide and zinc oxide also form a natural barrier against the sun and won't make your face go white as many traditional sunscreens containing zinc do.
Minerals don't just keep our skins looking flawless, sun safe and glowing. They're anti-inflammatory. Free from harmful synthetic ingredients, the skin can breathe and function normally, without clogging pores.
In powder form, mineral makeup doesn't support bacteria and so doesn't need preservatives.
Application is easy - use a good brush and apply powder in thin layers. This "less is more approach" means it's economical _ 10gm will last up to five months.
A word of warning: many prominent brands now market their products as mineral makeup, but they're often just adding the minerals to existing synthetic ingredients. To make sure you get the real deal, read the label and check the ingredients before you buy. If in doubt, buy loose powder rather than liquid foundation - it's less likely to contain junk.
