The kind of food Facebook is advertising to teenagers is the subject of a study being done at the University of Auckland.
The 'Food@Facebook Study' aims to see if ads for healthy or unhealthy food are popping up in the newsfeeds of Kiwi kids aged 13 to 17.
Researcher Alanna Soupen says advertising can have a huge influence on what people eat.
"Advertising of food and non-alcoholic drinks is an important factor influencing food choices related to obesity and diet-related chronic diseases," she said.
"Monitoring adolescents' exposure to food and beverage promotions, and the content of these promotions, is necessary to understand the extent of the unhealthy food marketing through social media and determine appropriate and effective policy responses."
