Etsy is a treasure trove for shoppers who are after something a bit different to what is hanging in the shops. The online marketplace is home to many a handmade thing, from craft to zines to fashion - including Victoria n' Bird.
Amy Clarke is the designer behind the Auckland-based label, creating simple, sweet pieces that girls want to wear - think pinafore dresses, plaid, ruffle detailing and scalloped hems. Her own wardrobe reflects her feminine aesthetic, and style inspiration can come from anywhere.
"I'm not highly season- or trend- orientated and do not actively seek inspiration, I just love to make things and have my eyes open for inspiration all the time," explains Clarke. "Inspiration can come from a variety of sources - movies, paging through magazines, streetstyle websites, sketches and people on the street."
Who are your favourite designers?
Susien Chong and Nic Briand of Lover. They continually create pieces which are not only delicate and feminine but incorporate a touch of rock 'n' roll, the perfect combination for any outfit. My favourite New Zealand designers would include Juliette Hogan; season after season she creates the most gorgeous dresses. I also have a weakness for Built by Wendy and Something Else.
What was the last item of clothing you bought?
A simple long-sleeved Stitch Ministry dress, a very lucky find in a second-hand clothing store.
Your favourite accessory?
Slouchy berets and beanies. I have picked up a few cute numbers that I can't wait to start wearing. And, they are also great for the inevitable bad hair days.
What's the one thing everyone should have in their wardrobe?
It may be a cliche but nothing beats a simple black dress, there is so much room for individuality in choosing the actual dress and then you can dress it up, dress it down, and accessorise to your heart's content.
What endures throughout the seasons?
Individuality.
What do you really want this coming season?
I am on the hunt for the perfect blazer to pair with skirts, scarves and tights for the impending cold weather.
Your favourite shop?
I love markets and Etsy for picking up items from talented up-and-coming designers. Also SaveMart for key pieces, especially if you can alter and add personal touches, and the thrill of finding a fashion designer bargain is such a great rush.
Your best beauty tip?
Get plenty of sleep. Also almond oil for dry skin, it's magic.
How do you define the word "fashionable"? What does it mean to you?
Wearing what makes you feel comfortable, reflecting your personality and sense of style, not just wearing what is in. True style is created by the individual, it can't be purchased.
Whose wardrobe would you most like to raid?
Zooey Deschanel, all those amazing vintage-inspired dresses.
Most cherished item?
My dog Leo. Everyone needs a sidekick.
