Expert Eye: World 2010

This was a salon-style show with guests to name drop seated for high tea in the Langham Hotel's mirrored great room.

Trust World to come up with something a bit different, with projected images reminding fans of key moments from previous collections before Wasted Days and Wasted Nights unfolded.

With a name like that leopard skin was bound to feature, less effectively though than classic camel pleat front pants and red wool boucle jackets.

For women, suiting was fiercely fitted. Extended collars, extravagant ruffles on an electric blue satin dress and plenty of fringing all said way of the World.

So too the see-thru plastic macs, one worn over a hot-pink anorak.
The men's wear in earthy tones was more street, with drill pants, quilted jackets and cuffed wool duffle coats.

Suiting in camel and brown check was smart and teal velvet pants were just dandy.

Strong styling with headpieces and winged eye makeup added to the sense of show, but for World this wasn't one of the wow years. A slightly subdued World show is still a step up from most of this season's pared back productions though and by relocating to a five-star setting a sense of occasion was delivered.

The most memorable moment, providing another striking look which must surely one day feature in a what would be fabulous World retrospective show, came from three silk stunners. These full length dresses, made specially as show pieces, billowed out to flowing trains in teal, fuchsia and acid yellow.
