Terry Everitt from Devonport Chocolates is a Willy Wonka for grown-ups. Once you've tried his truffle logs and liqueur chocolates it's hard not to become a little obsessed. Although he's been pleasing chocoholics for five years, in a former life he spent 30 years in the insurance industry.
What's the best thing about your job?
The people I meet and work with, and a great product. People buy for an indulgence, a gift, or a special occasion. It's never a grudge purchase so people are always happy.
How do you manage to stop yourself eating all the stock?
Because I work with chocolate every day the wonderful smell is enough to satisfy my cravings - most of the time.
How can you tell good chocolate from bad?
Good chocolate has a smooth texture and a high percentage of cocoa. Not-so-good chocolate is quite coarse, has a lot less cocoa and often leaves a fatty taste.
Is it true that chocolate is better than sex?
I asked our staff this once. They suggested that it depended on who you were eating chocolate with. No, just joking. Surely a healthy diet of both is best.
Your favourite way to eat chocolate?
My favourite way of eating chocolate is when it is part of a fruit platter you are having for dessert after dinner with friends.
How often should people eat chocolate?
Daily. But, like all things, with a touch of moderation - about 30g a day.
What kind of chocolate says "I love you" on Valentine's Day?
Any chocolate. But chocolate hearts are guaranteed to win the day.
What's the best drink to go with chocolate?
A good Chiasso coffee like Forte.
When you're not indulging in chocolate, what's your favourite food?
I'm a sucker for savoury flavours such as roast lamb and mint crisps.
Why does chocolate hold such a fascination for people?
Chocolate gives that pick-me-up that makes everyone feel better.
