Simple, uncluttered, good design inspires Annie Dow, whether it is in her love for art, architecture, furniture and fashion or in delivering distinctive brands for her clients.
The driving force behind Dow Design is known for creating great packaging for brands such as Kiwi Blue water, Anchor butter and rebranding Lion Nathan Wines and Spirits.
"My experiences in Australia and the UK mean I believe in the quality of New Zealand design," says Dow, who has offices in Auckland and Melbourne. "That's why I feel confident in taking Dow Design to the world - our Australian office is just the first step."
After graduating with a design diploma in the late 70s, Dow worked in New Zealand before moving to Sydney as an advertising creative, then to London as a graphic designer.
She worked at the London Stock Exchange as an art director in charge of a team of six, producing financial documents such as annual reports, corporate profiles and prospectuses.
By 1992 Dow was back in New Zealand and teamed with her life and business partner Greg Dow in a project for NZ Dairy Foods. Dow Design was formed in 1993. In addition to her love of beautiful design, she is a keen black-and-white photographer, enjoys, food and wine, travel and keeping fit.
Favourite fashion designers?
I love Easton Pearson, Chloe, and Rozae Nichols. Here in New Zealand it's Helen Cherry and Wallace Rose. But as I vary my dress styles and mix things up, there are many designers in my wardrobe.
What do you wear to work?
It depends on the nature of business for the day, whether I play casual or corporate. Heaven to wear are Paper Denim & Cloth jeans, a floaty shirt and Prada flat black boots. But I can't go past feeling strong and in control, in a suit and Sigerson Morrison or Jimmy Choo heels.
Favourite accessory?
For now, Zambesi pink silk beads (a birthday gift) and Roberto Cavalli new season sunnies.
What do you wear at home?
A colourful collection of great T-shirts and my latest favourite track pants are a brand called Burning Torch. Paper Denim & Cloth jeans are never far behind with, dare I say it, a pair of fluffy leopard slippers presented to me on Mother's Day by my son James.
Biggest fashion indulgence?
Fashion purchases on the whole are one of my favourite pastimes. I love new things and I'm not a good hoarder, so my niece benefits from my shopping addiction when I do my clear outs. Shoes are a big weakness.
Last item bought?
A pair of Emma Hope's Principessa gold sandals with jewels.
Favourite hotels?
The W chain, though I'm a resort girl really and love an indulgent, pampered stay at Huka Lodge, or Kembali Villas in Seminyak, Bali. A very relaxed, chic retreat, from where I tend to come back feeling more spiritually in tune, and inevitably, as Seminyak is so cool for shopping, armed with even more jewellery and accessories.
Best handbags?
I can't go past the softest leather with European designer Henry Beguelin. Timeless.
What inspires you?
Passion. I love passionate people.
Favourite colour?
It's got to be the change from blonde to brunette for me. I'm loving it, as all colours I wear have taken on a different look. In fact, when I look at photos of me blonde, I have to look twice.
Favourite store of the moment?
The whole of Ponsonby Rd.
What do you do for relaxation?
A great walk on a great beach, and then a great wine to follow.
Favourite look?
Sexy dresses and heels.
