What a treat for mothers on Mother's Day. Burned toast in bed and post-baby photos of Katie Holmes with bags under her eyes sharing the burden of mothers everywhere.
But one gets the impression it is Katie's bizarre fiance more than her new baby Suri who is responsible for her haunted look. She flutters the fingers of her free hand at the camera, while Tom Cruise keeps a firm clamp on the other one, parading her like a horse in a birdcage.
Her lithe if delicate look on the Mission: Impossible III red carpet, just 17 days after giving birth, might have resulted from her wearing not just one but two girdles beneath her glamorous frock, according to Woman's Day.
And Katie's new goal is not to be a hot mama but a "buff bride", and shake off 18kg in three weeks ahead of her wedding.
She has hired a fitness company, Buff Brides, after Cruise apparently told her that he wanted her to be the "most beautiful bride ever".
Holmes plans to wear a fitted strapless dress and "the last thing she wants is batwings!" says the woman behind Buff Brides. God forbid.
The New Zealand Woman's Weekly agrees that Katie is fragile, and both magazines have father Martin Holmes ranting about her drive to lose her post-baby weight and boost her red-carpet appearance to promote Cruise's new film.
"My daughter needs rest, relaxation and recuperation," says Katie's dad in the Weekly. "I simply can't go along with what is happening."
Both of these cover stories segue nicely into the latest word from the woman who was formerly the most beautiful bride ever.
Nicole Kidman has told the Ladies Home Journal about her "undying love" for Cruise.
"It was huge ... I still love him," she says in the Weekly. Somehow, Woman's Day has interpreted this as Kidman "wanting Tom back", but it also says her fiance Keith Urban is crushed by the admission and has called off their wedding, leaving Kidman bereft.
Also deserted is Brad Pitt's mother, who thinks that Angelina Jolie is snatching her son away from her and that she won't get a look in once her grandchild is born.
Putting "humanity" ahead of the Pitt family of Missouri in the conservative midwest hasn't done Angelina any favours.
But a friend of Ange's puts it all into perspective in the Day. "Angelina's not going to put aside her role as UN Goodwill Ambassador to sit around and let Brad's family feel her tummy every time there's a kick."
The winner of the blindingly obvious award goes this week to Nicole Richie, who has admitted that she is "too thin". The Day says she weighs in at 43kg and is seeing a nutritionist and a doctor - but thankfully not Buff Brides.
