Abbey Dean of Toi Toi floral design treats every event she works on as if it's her own personal party.
"I pride myself on the ultimate attention to detail in everything I do," says the Auckland florist, who has been involved in the industry for more than 12 years.
She started her career scrubbing buckets and sweeping the floor at Flowers After Hours, working her way up the ranks for 10 years before moving to London.
"I worked alongside some of the top florists and concept designers, constantly learning and adapting new styles."
During that time Dean's clients included Givenchy, Dolce & Gabbana , The Ivy restaurant, La Caprice, Louis Vuitton, and the Met.
When she returned from London she joined Toi Toi floral design as creative director and manager. Her clients include luxury boutique hotel Mollies.
What is the best thing about your job?
I constantly have the opportunity to design and create within an industry that I am passionate about.
What is your favourite flower?
Classic white Casablanca lilies as there is nothing more beautiful than a bold patterned bone china vase spilling over with open white Casablancas.
What's always in your garden?
Gardenias, with their fresh sweet smell, and an abundance of white hydrangea.
Where do you get your inspiration?
Constantly watching all creative industries that involve design. Flowing lines, patterns, colour and style inspire me.
What colours are you using mostly in your work?
At the moment I am drawn towards butter colours and creams, mandarins and ice greens and throwing in a bit of colour using turquoise French glass.
What is your signature style with your work?
Keeping the lines clean using a mass of one bloom and then adding a point of difference such as heavy printed fabrics in black and white or bundles of wire in ruby reds, golds and greens or large antique brooches.
What's the secret to creating a stunning floral arrangement?
Simplify, then accessorise.
What bloom looks best in a vase without adornment?
I hate to repeat myself but you just can't go past open white Casablanca lilies on their own.
