General Patton vs. The X-Ecutioners: Joint Special Operations Task Force

Mike Patton is just showing off now. He releases a collaboration album with a Norwegian guy called Kaada and then the next month he's shacked up with New York turntablists the X-Ecutioners (Roc Raida, Rob Swift, and Total Eclipse).

The collaboration came about after the X-Men did a few impromptu live shows with Patton.

He then gave the three DJs a selection of records from his collection - a beastly and diverse selection, no doubt - to put some sounds together. Later, Patton gave it one last going-over and the results include the sinister MCOO (the intro is the piano on I Don't Like Sundays by the Boomtown Rats) and the manic scratching of Duelling Banjo.

We all know Patton can rap ... remember, "Can you feel it, see it, hear it today? If you can't, then it doesn't matter anyway," from Faith No More's Epic? But how does he go with music of the pure hip-hop variety behind him? Not too badly actually, although his part-croon, part-serenade vocals are more dominant.

And it isn't strictly hip-hop either, more a schizophrenic 23-track journey of cut'n'paste mash-ups of stomach-screwing proportions.
