Liz Mitchell's 20 years of experience in the fashion industry includes time as a set and costume designer for both television and the theatre.
It is this sense of drama and glamour that flows throughout the ready-to-wear collections, bridal wear and distinctive couture designs for which she is known.
Can you describe in detail the first outfit you ever designed?
When I was nine, I designed an A-line halter-neck summer dress. It was a multi-coloured, Op Art design in printed cotton pique inspired by Mary Quant.
Who are your favourite international fashion designers?
Dries Van Noten, Alberta Ferretti, Marni, Vivienne Westwood and Jean Paul Gaultier.
What makes a good wardrobe?
Not being a slave to fashion - finding pieces that reflect your individual style and personality. Great pieces will last many seasons.
What do you wear when you are relaxing at home?
Wearing natural fibres is very important to a feeling of comfort - cotton, cashmere, linen, knitwear.
What was your biggest fashion indulgence?
My first Robert Clergerie shoes while at art school. It planted the seed for an ongoing love of shoes.
What is the biggest fashion mistake you have ever made?
Using Joan Collins-style shoulder pads when I was in charge of wardrobe on the 80s TV show Gloss. I now approach shoulder pads with extreme caution.
What is your favourite accessory?
I love New Zealand contemporary jewellery and visit Avid and Fingers regularly. My favourite piece is a greenstone bracelet by Joe Sheehan carved from a core sample of greenstone rock.
