By MARGARET BEAMES
"Here!" she called, ignoring their yells. "There's a poor little dog. He's hurt."
"A dog?" The children ran up and crowded around to see. "Whose dog? What's the matter with him?"
"He hasn't got a collar on. I think he's lost," Fliss said. "Don't crowd him, you'll scare him," she said bossily, although the dog certainly didn't seem scared.
"Eugh! He's filthy," one girl said.
"Careful he doesn't bite," someone else warned.
"He won't bite," said Fliss confidently. "I think he's used to children."
"He's probably got fleas," Rene said.
"No, he hasn't," she argued, although to be honest he looked as if he might have. "Get him some water, somebody."
"I'll go," said Callum.
He raced away, Daniel close on his heels.
