By MARGARET BEAMES
The game began. They needed the practice because Penrose School was playing College Street School in three days time and for once it looked as if they had a chance of winning, but it wouldn't be easy. The boys batted first and Rene sent down her sneakiest spinners. Daniel was out almost at once to an easy catch. Rick almost made it to third base before he too was caught.
Callum settled his feet and took a firm grip on the bat. Rene swung her arm -- once, twice, a third time -- and let go. Keeping his eye on the ball, Callum struck it an almighty whack!
"Ye-ay!" the boys cheered as it flew towards the fence.
Fliss streaked after it, snatched it up and hurled it back to base, but the batter was safely home.
Fliss didn't see him. She was looking towards the boundary fence under the trees where what looked like a bundle of grubby white rags had caught her eye.
