Budding DJs learned a few new uses for squash balls, five cent coins and Blu Tack at a DJ workshop on Saturday.
Around 200 people attended the workshop, given by local DJ Greg Churchill and UK DJ Jim Baron as part of the Ignite 2001 festival.
Greg Churchill combined tips on how to break into the industry with tales of DJ disasters he had experienced in his 13-year career.
"A couple of five cent coins and some Blu Tak in your bag – they're all just the result of wishing I had something when things went wrong," said Churchill.
The audience found advice on everything from making a mix tape to packing records helpful, despite the varied age and experience levels within the group.
"Even though I've played in a few clubs, the stuff on how to get a gig had a few things I didn't even think about," said 26-year old Mitch.
Churchill has been a headline DJ at numerous Auckland and national events, and will travel to the UK in a few months to play a very different role – warming up the crowd.
"There's a hierarchy – always – no matter how good you are. You can be a top DJ but there will always be someone above you, so you have to be flexible."
The Ignite 2001 festival finishes tomorrow night.
